I visited recently a dog owner who couldn’t control his dog while walking. Their walk was more a “dog walks man” than “man walks dog”. You know what I mean. This kind of pulling the leash wouldn’t be so painful for the dog if he had a dog harness. But well, just having a dog harness doesn’t solve the pulling-the-leash problem.
A dog harness is nevertheless the better solution for any overly energetic dog than a simple leash or even a retractable leash. It is holding the body of the dog instead just his neck and feels definitely more comfortable for the dog.
Updated 2017: new products added!
There are many great models of dog harnesses available. Check out the materials and the designs and most of all be aware of the size. It needs to fit your dog perfectly. Measure your dog’s chest in order to find the best size.
Take a look at the detailed information given by the brands of good dog harnesses about the necessary chest size for a perfect fit. Also find out if you would like to have a handle directly on the harness or not. Each model is different and in its way perfect.
But let’s get back to the pulling-the-leash problem. How can you stop your dog from pulling the leash when you go for a walk? The solution is surprisingly simple, but you will need a lot of patience, even more when your dog is already older and used of this kind of walk.
Definitely use a dog harness for your training, it will make the learning for your dog easier and less painful.
Here is the simple tip of how to stop your dog from pulling at the leash: Start with your training in your backyard or somewhere where you can literally just stand at one place or stay in a very narrow radius. Then make a step forward. The moment your dog starts to run of and pulls at the leash, you stand still and turn into another direction. Your dog will be confused, will turn around and pull into the new direction thinking you want to go that way. You stand again still and turn into a new direction.
This simple move is all you do. Over and over again. For as long as you want or as long as your dog gets the idea to pay attention to you and not to his running off. It might take a long time, as I said, depending on your dog’s age and willingness to learn. And you won’t make big walks until your dog learned that he waits for you to determine where you want to go.
But your effort will be well worth it. Your dog will enjoy your future walks together as much as you. And all the other persons who will walk your dog.
Always remember, your dog wants to please you. That’s his motor to do what you want.

Great. Way more control than a standard leash and doesn’t choke the dog when she darts after a squirrel and hits the end of the lead. The dog doesn’t seem to mind the extra setup either.

I love this harness. I got the medium size for my 50lb Aussie and after making it just a big longer under the chest, it fits perfectly. She walks, runs, and jumps easily in this harness. And I LOVE that there is a front clip and a back clip! I’m really happy with it, and so is my dog.
The harness works well and adjusts easily to fit my 50 lb dog comfortably.
The first harness my puppy has not chewed through! Finally got one I can keep for a while. Hooking the leash in the front gives me back control when walking my dog.
