There are different opinions out there among cat owners and even veterinarians about cat treats and if and how much you can give to your cats. Although most of the cat treats are really not very healthy and just add calories to the cat’s daily diet, they still can have their purpose.
I belong to those who encourages cat owners to give their cats treats – in a very moderate way. And this is exactly what the whole discussion should be about. How much, when and what kind of treats can you offer your cat?
While some treats are just that: treats. Not very healthy and definitely not suitable as replacement for a full diet. Others are made of nutritionally valuable ingredients and are therefore quite healthy. Some brands suggest that their treats are helping when the cat has fur problems, teeth problems, digestion or hairball problems. Well, generally I‘d recommend to check with your vet when these and other health issues appear. A treat is not meant to be a medication but can nevertheless support healing efforts.
There are some points you need to be aware of when you give your cat treats. First of all, as most treats are nothing more than tasty calories, you need to reduce the amount of the daily food when you offer treats during the day. Also don‘t forget to always provide fresh water.
Although most of the treats come in a resealable container or bag, make sure that you keep it in a cool dry place – and sometimes very very far from every reach for your cat. Some cats might do everything to find the bag and to open it on their own.
When should you give treats to your cats? Surely you wouldn’t give treats when your cat is loud or otherwise interrupting just to make her stop this behavior. This said, there still might be moments when giving a treat can reduce stress for your cat or help overcome scary moments.
As it is with all treats you can use them for education. If you want to encourage a certain behavior of your cat you can work with treats. You might be surprised how much you can train and educate a cat.
Another way to give treats to your cat is while playing with your cat. It will help bonding with your little friend.
However, when you decide to give your cat a treat, always be guided by moderation. One or two pieces will be plenty for one day. You will need to find out which cat treat will be preferred by your cat. No worries, your cat will certainly show you which one is his favorite.

I don’t know why these treats are so addictive, but my cats can’t get enough of them. Doesn’t matter what flavor they are – they’re gobbled up in a matter of seconds. A wonderful option for cat owners, especially with these larger size containers. Definitely recommended!
My cat absolutely LOVES Temptations creamy dairy flavor treats. I love that they are nutritionally complete and balanced, plus they are low calorie. I was pleased to learn that if I ever run out of her wet cat food I can feed her 1/4 cup as a main meal until I can purchase her regular wet food because it is THAT nutritionally complete.
The favorite around here 🙂 My cats don’t like any other treats! And my older cat can chew these even though they are crunchy.

My cats love Party Mix. Their favorite treat. I love this canister size as it lasts awhile. Product stays fresher longer which my cats do notice. They get so excited when they see the canister come out.
I have the hardest time finding food for my cat, she’s the pickiest eater I’ve ever encountered, and I’ve had the privilege of living with many cats over the years. She loves these treats and makes sure I know how much she loves them!
My 3 cats go crazy for this stuff. I find I have to be careful with this because they will want to eat this for a daily meal instead of just a few little treats. This has become one of their favorite snacks.
