As I said in earlier posts reptiles as well as amphibians like – or better – need a hiding place where they can rest, relax and sleep. A place that‘s covered simulating a cave is the best solution for most reptiles and amphibians.
A cave for reptiles and amphibians has several advantages that might help you in your decision to get one for your gecko, snake, toad or turtle.
Reptiles and amphibians that can‘t hide somewhere from the daily noises in your home and from outdoors fall easily into stress that causes many health issues. You can observe their need for a hiding shelter when you place a cave into their terrariums and watch their behavior. Most of the reptiles and amphibians occupy it immediately and stay in there for most of the time. They use it as hiding place when somebody catches them off guard by entering the room surprisingly. They immediately disappear in the cave. It‘s their safety place.
Well, providing a security feeling for your pet reptile or pet amphibian is one of the advantages of a reptile cave. Another is the fact that a cave creates a great humid micro-climate for your little pet friend that can remain for several days. Reptile owners confirm that the shedding process happens much faster and easier when they keep the inside of the cave humid. How can you do that? By adding moist paper towels you already achieve the needed humidity. Of course you can fill your cave also with terrarium moss which you spray with water from time to time. Humidity isn’t just important for a healthy shedding, it also helps for egg laying.
The available caves come in different sizes. Make sure that you find the best size for your pet reptile or pet amphibian. You might get already a larger size even when your pet reptile is still small, but you know it will grow. Naturally the size is also important compared to your terrarium. Will it fit and still give enough space around it?
Also take into consideration which cave style will fit your terrarium style the best. There are great realistic looking caves available that can easily be integrated as desert and tropical terrarium decor.

Purchased the medium for my adult leopard gecko; the hole is a little small, but his body fits very well in the cave itself. He definitely loves it and is spending a lot of time inside; I hope it helps him shed! It’s very high quality and a great place for them to hide. Highly recommend!
My adult leopard gecko is 17 years old and has refused to use a moist hide his whole life. I thought I’d buy this. Jinx went in, and didn’t want to come out! He LOVES this thing! ! It has some weight to it so your gecko won’t tip it over. I think the Large Cave is perfect for an adult leopard, possibly two.
GREAT size for my leopard gecko and she LOVES it. Now it is her go to place to sleep and it stay moist for a few days. Isn’t too big for my 10 gallon. Fits perfect. And it’s great quality, heavy solid material.

My toads and I could not be happier with our small and medium caves. They each have their very own home now. Very realistic looking, could fool anyone. Very durable.
This is my Python’s favorite hide by far. He loves it and is in it all the time. He is 3 ft long with plenty of space. We have a 55 gallon and have plenty of space for 2 of them. Cleaning is a breeze too, and it dries very quickly.
I got the Extra Large cave for my 5 ft corn snake, Francis. Francis loves it and is curled up inside right now. It is a nice upgrade from his baby-sized shelter.

My little garter snake really enjoys it! So when I turn the heat lamp on he climbs on top of the rock to soak up the heat:) I got the small and it is big for my tiny snake, but he will grow into it. Also I have it in a 5 gallon tank. I love this and I definitely recommend!
My two young leopard geckos immediately crawled in and now spend most of their time inside together. I defiantly recommend this to anyone with small reptiles, especially leopard geckos but would suggest maybe getting a medium size. The size small easily fits into my 10 gallon tank with plenty of space left over.
My two gecko’s love this, dampen terrarium moss and add a little bit of water at the bottom makes a great moist hide for them, helps them shed nicely and quickly. Provides an easy way to create a moist hide and not having to worry about humidity levels.
