Is your dog shivering when you go with him or her on a longer winter walk or hiking in the snow? Well, a cold weather dog vest would surely help your dog to feel comfortable enough to be out in cold weather.
Some people might wonder why dogs need dog winter vests or dog sweaters at all. They say, aren’t wolfs, foxes and coyotes out there in cold weather and being totally fine with their winter coat. I take this argument serious and want to answer it in regard to our dogs and explain why some dogs need a cold weather vest and others not.
So, how is it with dogs and cold weather? Dogs have their fur that should keep them warm, right? It’s true, dogs have their external layering fur system that keeps them certainly warmer than we people would be without clothing on a cold winter day.
But there are actually differences in the fur layers for different dogs. Some have thinner and lighter layers than others. Just take a look at a Husky and a Boxer. Just looking at a Boxer might give you the impression that he is perfectly fine in winter temperatures. But actually many Boxers are cold intolerant meaning they don’t like to be outside when the temperatures fall under a certain degree.
Also shivering in cold weather could have genetic reasons. Some dog breeds are better suited to cold weather than others. Dog breeds with very short coats and little to no undercoat are very sensitive to cold such as the Maltese Shi Tzu. And there are dog breeds that are genetically tolerant with cold weathers like the Bernese Mountain Dogs.
It’s actually quite easy for you to find out if your dog is cold tolerant or cold sensitive. When the winter temperatures are arriving and you’re out on a walk or hike with your dog, watch him. Signs like shivering and trembling are showing that your dog feels cold. Also he might hold his tail close to his body and even try finding shelter from cold winds.
Another clear sign a dog being cold is showing are cold ears, especially around the ear edges. When possibly even your dog’s body feels cold it’s really time to get inside and allow your dog to get warm again. Also your dog might be whining or barking to show you that he is cold or he curls up with the tail tucked in.
You will find that a winter dog vest or cold weather dog vest will help your dog to enjoy outdoor activities even when it’s cold. A sweater keeps your dog warm enough and can make that important difference in how well your dog feels in cold temperatures.
The following cold weather vests have each its advantages. Every brand has its way to measure a dog’s size in order to find out which size vest would fit the best. If your dog has an in-between size always choose the next larger vest. Your dog’s motions shouldn’t be disturbed by the winter coat at all.
Some vests come with a leash attachment on the back, others not. This detail might help you decide which vest is the best for your dog.

I just got this today. It’s adorable, fits my dog perfectly, and I think it will keep her warm without it being too bulky. Zipping it up was no problem at all. I really like that I can attach her leash directly to the vest.
I love this coat! It is so easy to put on and take off and I love that it has the D-rings on the back so she doesn’t have to wear a harness under the jacket. Very adorable and it looks warm. I would recommend this coat.
This dog vest is the very best made I have found. The zipper and leash hook are reliable so there is no fear of it coming apart while on a walk with my dog. I would definitely recommend this product.
