Offering your chinchillas a good healthy chinchilla food is essential. And it is also important to make sure that your chinchillas really eat the whole food you offer them. Here are some thoughts and tips about healthy chinchilla food and how to invite your fluffy little guy to eat it.
What food is considered to be healthy chinchilla food? First of all: pellets! You generally have two options about what and how to feed your little chinchilla.
First option: you feed your chinchillas an all-pellet diet and add some additional so called fun food as treats. With this option you may have the better control over your chinchilla‘s health and food choices. Very often though chinchillas decide to ignore the pellets – waiting for the treats, the „good stuff“.
Second option: you feed your chinchillas a fortified diet where pellets are mixed in with treat food like raisins and all kinds of seeds. With this choice you might experience that your chinchilla is only eating the „good stuff“ and leaving the pellets untouched.
However, your main attention will be in any case on the fact that you supervise your chinchilla‘s eating habits and that you encourage your little friend to eat everything. Here are some tips how you help your chinchilla to eat everything.
With the first option you have more control over what your chinchilla is eating. Add treats carefully and make sure that the raisins – for which chinchillas generally go crazy – are unsweetened and the seeds such as sunflower seeds or almonds are unsalted. And importantly: Only give these treats when your chinchilla finished the pellet diet.
With the fortified food, pellets mixed with seeds and raisins, you need to make sure that your chinchillas are eating the whole diet not just picking out what they like. I actually know chinchillas that eat the whole diet just to make sure that they will get it the next day again. Smart little guys!
If you want to switch your chinchilla’s food, do it slowly. Chinchillas have very sensitive digestive tracts that can‘t handle abrupt changes in their daily diet. So, when you choose a food for your chinchilla make sure that you add it slowly until your chinchilla gets used to it.
