Let’s speak about why salt is so important to horses? Generally it’s the same health requirement we people have with salt. Not eating salt at all is even more harmful to the body than eating too much salt – which by the way we know more about than the other option.
Salt – or sodium chloride – is essential for health. It helps nerves to send and receive electrical impulses, it helps the muscles stay strong and keeps generally the cells and brain functioning. What’s important to know about salt is that the body cannot produce it, salt needs to be eaten. And I wasn’t just speaking about human bodies. These facts refer to all bodies. That’s why your horses need to have access to salt – preferably in form of a Himalayan Salt Lick.
Salt is inseparably connected to water intake. As you probably know, the body loses salt when sweating. When your horses are perspiring, they need more salt than under normal circumstances. Normally horses require about 1-2 ounces of salt every day. In hot climates or after exercise they require 4-6 ounces of salt.
How do you know if your horse gets enough salt? It’s quite easy actually. Observe your horse’s behavior. Is he licking or chewing objects with salt on them like fork handles for example? That’s a strong sign. You also may see that your horse is drinking unusually little water. These are alarm signs. Don’t wait too long! Lack of salt can cause severe health issues for your horse.
Why is Himalayan Rock Salt such a great Horse Salt Lick? This salt is a great source of magnesium, iron and potassium, all of them vital nutrients. You see that these Horse Salt Licks come in a distinctive pink color. This color indicates the high mineral content of the block. The natural Himalayan salt is widely appreciated for its purity and its abundance of trace minerals. All the following Salt Licks for Horses contain 84 essential and trace minerals.
And last but not least, these salt licks are safe for all kinds of animals, from horses to goats, sheep and cows to even wildlife like deer and elk. You can hang them indoors as well as outdoors because they are weather resistant. Important is that your horses have access to their salt lick all the time.

Consistent size and shape. Holes are well placed. Salt is solid. Easy to turn and my horses really like it. If you turn the block to keep it even it will last on the rope a longer.
I love this product because the rope is durable and the horses seem to prefer it over block licks. It lasts a long time and can be smashed into smaller pieces for use in feed when it is almost gone and doesn’t hang on the rope well anymore.
Our horse loves this salt. It doesn’t break up like the normal salt blocks plus it lasts much longer.

This is a great salt lick for a great price! The length of the rope is actually tucked inside the hole, so you have to pull it out of the hole in order to use it. This is the largest block I’ve gotten and it’s been about a month now and it’s held up well to my Percheron cross loving on it daily!
My horse loves Himalayan salt and this block is big! Very cost effective and the rope to hang it is stuffed within the center hole. Ordering another for my new horse that comes today!
Really like this, it is hard enough that they don’t bite it, and it also lasts a long time, it doesn’t crumble, or do anything weird. . I like that I can just tie it to the fence on their paddock and if I wanted to, it is easy to move. Best of all, they lick it like crazy.
