After writing about Cat Litter Boxes it is time to speak about cat litter itself. According to a research that I read once cats prefer fine-grained litters. Well, that’s exactly what most of the available cat litters are like.
There are different types of cat litter with different advantages and disadvantages. I will also speak about how to handle outdoor cats that prefer dirt.
Besides this traditional clay litter you can find scooping/clumping litter as well as crystal-based litter or even plant-derived biodegradable litter. Cats normally accept litters of all kinds quite well.
Another important point is the smell of the litter. If smell is an issue for you, you might choose a brand like Arm & Hammer guaranteeing a smell-free home.
Many cat owners use scented litter in order to mask the litter box’s odor. Well, that’s great if your cat is accepting the litter’s scent. Many cats don’t. They also refuse to use a litter box when an air freshener is placed near it. The best method to fight the cat litter box odor is to keep it clean. Maybe you decide to use a cat litter disposal system. Or maybe you try to place baking soda on the bottom of the box. Generally you can be sure that your smell-sensitive cat is repelled from a bad smelling cat litter box far before you are.
And finally let’s speak about a common mistake. Often cat owners think that the more litter they put in the cat litter box the less often they have to clean it. This is not the case. You have to clean the litter box in the same routine, and will throw away more litter than necessary. And, what’s more important, most cats, and the long-haired cats mostly, don’t like litter that is more than 2 inches deep.
Is your cat an outdoor cat and used to dirt, soil or sand? Well, you may notice that your cat uses your houseplants as cat litter box. In order to lure your cat to the litter box mix into the litter some soil. If possible you can also replace the litter with sand.
Once you find your preferred cat litter, stay with it. Cats have a hard time to get used to new litter. They will, of course, if a change is necessary, with a lot of patience on your side. Please be aware that the different brands have different sizes of bags that has a direct influence on the price.

- Hypo-allergenic and 99.9% dust-free
- Excellent clumping clay litter
- Contains heavy tracking granules and medium grain
- No plant proteins
- Perfect for multi-cat families
- 40 lbs. bag
This litter is absolutely amazing, the best I’ve ever used. It’s unscented, and the litter box remains odorless even after heavy use.
This Precious Cat litter is not dusty. No fragrance added, but the litter works so good that I can’t even smell the poo and the urine during cleaning out of the boxes.
It clumps really, really well and is easy to scoop. I also think it does a good job of masking odors.
Arm & Hammer Clump&Seal Litter
- Ultra low dust
- No crumbly clumps
- Seals and destroys odor
- multi-cat strength
- 38 lbs. bag
It clumps solidly like a rock. It sifts through the scooper like fine beach sand. It doesn’t kick up any clay dust clouds. It has a light, pleasant, but not overwhelming scent. And it retains freshness for a week (sometimes longer).
I’ve been using it for a couple of months. Absolutely no odor. None.
If I forget to clean the litter box out one day you can not tell.
Purina Tidy Cats Litter
- Exclusive bi-component system
- Every 2-part granule absorbs odor, liquids and clumps tight
- Continuous odor control from solid and liquid waste
- Anti-dust coating
- 19 lbs. bag
It’s lightweight to carry in & I don’t break my back dragging the waste out to garbage. Clumps great & has good odor control.
Great litter. I especially like that it’s lighter weight because I have four cats and five litter boxes so I do a lot of litter box cleaning.
I like this litter because it smells good when the cats do their thing, it doesn’t smell like ammonia, and its easy to sift through.
WORLD’S BEST CAT LITTER
- Advanced natural clumping cat litter
- Smaller, tighter clumps; absorbs more liquid
- Long lasting lighter material
- 28 lbs. bag
It clumps so amazing it doesn’t really leave behind any yucky when you sift it so from what I experienced so far you really don’t need to empty the whole pan every couple days so you aren’t wasting by over filling it.
We have used this for years. Although it is listed as flushable, we do not flush because of septic system and multiple cats.
Clumping is fairly good, but the larger clumps can break when being scooped. No residual pee collects on the bottom of the pan so there is very little urine odor if you tend to the pans on a regular basis.
